Research project – FSIS – The Perceptions of Ethnic Identities and Stereotyping in the Early Modern Era between the Mediterranean and Central Europe.

In this research project we want to explore the role that ethnic stereotypes played in the emergence and consolidation of nation-states in Europe between 1492 and 1848. The main focus will be on the Habsburg lands between Venice and the Pannonian Plain, it aims to examine both the convergences and the differences in how specific ethnic groups were perceived, both internally and externally.

Ethnic stereotypes have played an important role in shaping the map of Europe over the past five centuries. These ethnic stereotypes, often referred to as national characters during the Early Modern period, were cultural constructs shaped by ethnographic, historical, and political considerations, as well as by encounters with the Other.

The Research Group

The project will be hosted by the New University in Ljubljana, the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU), and the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. The group consists of researchers with many years of experience in managing academic projects of ARRS, and we have cooperated on many projects and co-organised various conferences together.
