Participating Institutions and Research Team

The project will be hosted by the New University in Ljubljana, the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU), and the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. The team is gender and age balanced. The group consists of researchers with many years of experience in managing academic projects of ARRS, and we have cooperated on many projects and co-organised various conferences together. The team members are all qualified researchers with ample organizational and research experience, proven records of accomplishment, and a wide network of contacts in the international scholarly community.

Dr. Izidor Janžekovič (principal investigator, New University in Ljubljana)

Dr. Izidor Janžekovič has recently graduated summa cum laude at the Central European University in Vienna. He was a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard University. He was a teaching fellow for the Princeton Global History Lab, a research fellow at Leiden University and King’s College London. He holds two Bachelors and two Masters in history and archaeology, as well as another Masters in early modern European history from the University of Oxford. He has published several original articles in prestigious journals, including the History of Political Thought, Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, History of European Ideas, and History and Anthropology.

Prof. Ddr. Igor Grdina (Institute of Cultural History, ZRC SAZU)

Dr. Igor Grdina is a senior research fellow and a full professor of cultural history and Slovenian literature. He was a visiting professor at universities in Slovenia and abroad. In 2009, he was awarded the ZRC SAZU gold medal for outstanding research work in the field of Slovenian history, cultural history and Slovenian literature. He is the author of several groundbreaking historical studies, including co-authoring the first concise history of Slovenia and Slovenes written in English, The Land Between: A History of Slovenia, published by Peter Lang (2024).

Prof. Dr. Urška Perenič (Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana)

Dr. Urška Perenič is a senior research fellow and a full professor of Slovenian literature. She specializes in the Slovenian narrative
prose, poetry and drama of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries. She is one of the most active researchers in her field, publishing five scientific monographs in the last four years: three independent books on the classics of Slovenian literature of the nineteenth century (Josip Jurčič, Ivan Tavčar, Luiza Pesjakova) and two edited volumes on the famous concentration camp survivor and Slovenian author, Boris Pahor. Her book on Luiza Pesjakova was recognized as the excellent achievement of the Faculty of Arts in 2022.

Prof. Dr. Boris Golec (Milko Kos Historical Institute, ZRC SAZU)

Dr. Boris Golec is a senior research fellow and a full professor at Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. He has participated and
led many research projects on social and identity mobility in the early modern Habsburg lands between the Alps and Adriatic. Golec’s monograph on the process of ‘Croatization’ in the early modern era in parts of today’s eastern Slovenia has received international acclaim since its publication in 2012; it was translated into English in 2017 and into Croatian in 2018. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Slovenian Society for 18th-Century Studies, a member of the international association ISECS.

Prof. Dr. Vanja Kočevar (Milko Kos Historical Institute, ZRC SAZU)

Dr. Vanja Kočevar is a research associate and professor of early modern history. He deals with the political history of the
Slovenian ethnic territory in the early modern period, focusing on the Duchy of Carniola and studying the symbolic communication and political rituals using the example of the Carniolan provincial assemblies and inaugurations. He also explores the development of collective identities in present-day Slovenia before the rise of national movements. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Slovenian Society for 18th-Century Studies.

Prof. Dr. Tomaž Ivešić (New University in Ljubljana)

Dr. Tomaž Ivešić is a research associate and the Dean of the Faculty of Slovenian and International Studies at the New University in Ljubljana. In his research, he explores the cultural and intellectual history of Slovenia and wider Yugoslavia in transnational perspectives, as well as the history and theory of nationalisms. He has authored a number of scientific articles and chapters in monographic publications in Slovenia and abroad, including The Rise and Fall of Communist Yugoslavism: Soft Nation Building in Yugoslavia (2024), published by Routledge.

Prof. Dr. Monika Deželak Trojar (Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies, ZRC SAZU)

Dr. Monika Deželak Trojar is a research associate, working on early modern Slovenian literature and historiography. In 2017, she wrote the first fundamental monograph on Johann Ludwig Schönleben. She researches the theatre activities of the former Jesuit college in Ljubljana. She has also published on the Passion processions of the Capuchins (Škofja Loka Passion Play, Passion processions in Ljubljana) and the beginnings of religious drama in the historical lands of Slovenia. She has worked with an immense variety of archival materials (Slovene, Latin, German) held in libraries and archives at home and abroad (Vienna, Rome, Celovec, Zagreb).

Prof. Dr. Luka Vidmar (Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies, ZRC SAZU)

Dr. Luka Vidmar is a senior research fellow and a professor of cultural history at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. He works on literature, art, and culture in Slovenia in the early modern period, especially on the libraries, academies, censorship, theatre and cultural nationalism. Among his numerous books is also A Slavic Republic of Letters: The Correspondence between Jernej Kopitar and Baron Žiga Zois, published by Peter Lang in 2016. In 2021, he co-edited (with Marijan Dović) a special issue of the journal Slavica Tergestina (Habsburg Censorship and Literature in the Slovenian Lands).

Ana Štern

Ana Štern finished a Master’s degree in Law, at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana. She has been appointed as an Assistant in the field of Law, specializing in International and European Law, at the European Faculty of Law.

Advisory Board

The international Advisory Board is an external group of experts with combined expertise in the key domain covered by the project. It provides support and feedback to the research team and aids in research and management issues. The Advisory Board assures external evaluation of the project outputs and provides advices for dissemination of project results. Members will also be invited to attend the project’s concluding conference.
